Usually ‘farmstead where goats are kept’, from OScand. geit + tūn: Gayton Norfolk. Gaituna (1086) (DB). Gayton Wirral. Gaitone (1086) (DB). Gayton le Marsh Lincolnshire Geiton (1206). Affix means ‘in the marsh’ from OE mersc with loss of preposition. Gayton le Wold Lincolnshire Gettone (1086) (DB). Affix means ‘on the wold(s)’ with loss of preposition, see Wolds.
