GB Railways was a company created in 1995 by Michael Schabas, Jeremy Long, Jim Morgan and Max Steinkopf to bid for British railway franchises. The company won the Anglia Railwaysrail franchise in 1997. In 1999 it successfully acquired the passenger services of Australian National Railways, in a consortium including Serco and Macquarie Bank. GB Railways provided the business strategy which allowed Great Southern Railway to enter profitability. GB Railways sold its shares to Serco in 2002, which continues to operate the Ghan, Indian Pacific and Overland services. In 2000 GB Railways launched Hull Trains, a new open access intercity rail operator, and GB Railfreight. In 2004 the company was acquired by FirstGroup and lost the Anglia franchise to National Express.
