Gen Marusuke Nogi

Military History Companion: Gen Marusuke Nogi

Nogi, Gen Marusuke (1849-1912). Nogi was declared a ‘war god’ after the Russo-Japanese war. Following a landing in Korea the Japanese under Nogi took Port Arthur in June 1904 after a vicious siege with the loss of 100, 000 Japanese troops. The victory released Nogi's forces for an advance on Mukden, which was taken following a fierce frontal assault. Despite the accolade given to him, Nogi was ashamed of his performance and wanted to commit suicide. The Meiji emperor denied him permission, so Nogi had to wait until the death of his sovereign before expiating his guilt.
