Gene Amondson, (born 1943 in Morton, Washington) is a landscape painter, woodcarver, minister, lecturer and Prohibition activist who was the 2004 United States presidential candidate for one faction of the Prohibition Party and the nominee of the party in 2008.

Biography
Amondson grew up in Washington and attended Warner Pacific College in Portland, Oregon, where he graduated with a BS in zoology. He was raised as a Republican and his brother served as a member of the Oregon State Senate. [1] Amondson is a member of the Church of God, and as a minister reenacts the Billy Sunday sermon entitled the Sermon Against Alcohol. Amondson is divorced and has four children.[2] He was invited as a guest on Oprah after sending a letter to show about singles in Seattle. The show received high ratings and was repeated four times. [3] Amondson currently resides on Vashon Island in Washington.
Presidential campaigns
2004
In 2004 Amondson began his first campaign for president of the United States. He was nominated as the candidate by one faction of the Prohibition Party. The other faction had nominated perennial candidate Earl Dodge. Both candidates were on the ballot in Colorado, so the race between the two was seen by some as way of determining which faction would lead the party in the future. Amondson won this contest, collecting 1896 (1512 of those were from Louisiana) votes compared to Dodge's 140. As expected, Amondson placed well behind both major candidates (George W. Bush received 1.1 million votes, and John Kerry received over 1 million votes). He placed eighth in a slate of 12 presidential candidates on Colorado's ballot (Dodge placed last, even though it was his home state). Amondson's third place finish in four Louisiana parishes was the first time since 1960 that the Prohibition Party candidate for President outpolled all other minor party candidates for President in any county.

Amondson was the 2008 Prohibition Party nominee for President. After the passing of Earl Dodge, only one faction of the party remains. During an interview with Wikinews Amondson admitted that third party candidates such as himself have no chance of winning elections, yet he stated that they "say wise things." He commented that he would favor the election of a Republican candidate over a Democrat because of the difference in Supreme Court judges that would be nominated and the policy of the candidate toward Israel. Amondson stated that he would have liked to have former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich as his running mate but ultimately the designation went to Leroy Pletten. [1]
