Biography

Clarinetist Gene Coleman is active in new music, modern classical, and avant-garde jazz. Born in 1958, he studied music, film, and visual arts at the School of Art Institute in his native Chicago; also during this time, he studied composition. Coleman received numerous awards and commissions from the Illinois Arts Council, the Jory Foundation, and more. He has composed over 40 works, and has collaborated with many celebrated composers, including Malcolm Goldstein, Vinko Globokar, and Roscoe Mitchell. The close of the 1990s found him the leader of Ensemble Noamnesia, and in Plus-Minus, a project with members of Austria's Polwechsel, with whom he began collaborating in 1997. ~ Joslyn Layne, All Music Guide
