Army General (Russian: генерал армии, general armii) is the second highest military rank in the Russian Federation, inferior only to a Marshal. It is a direct counterpart of the Soviet rank, General of the Army (USSR).

At present it is also the highest rank in the Air Force, Artillery, Military Space Troops, Armoured Troops, Engineer Troops and Signal Troops, unlike the Soviet Union where similarly ranked officers were called Marshals and Chief Marshals of a branch.

The corresponding naval rank is Admiral of the Fleet.

From 1992 to 1997 the insignia resembled a late Soviet one with a single large star and a Ground Forces emblem, but in 1997 that was changed to four stars in a row.

Just like its Soviet counterpart, General of the Army can be considered an equivalent to U.S. General of the Army.

A Russian General of the Army would normally be equivalent to a US General or General of the Army. Usually, one would have to add one star to the number of stars worn by a Russian general to determine the equivalent US rank. Russian General Majors usually occupy command and staff positions that are equivalent to those held by US Major Generals. For example, Russian divisions are normally commanded by General Majors, and US divisions are commanded by Major Generals. Positions normally billeted to Brigadier Generals in US Army are for the most part occupied by Colonels in the Russian Army, for example, deputy division commanders. Likewise, Russian General Lieutenants command formations higher than division just like US Lieutenant Generals. Equating the number of stars that Russian and US generals currently wear is a mistake. The one star rank of Brigadier was abolished in the Russian Empire 1798. Since then the lowest ranking Russian generals (General Majors) wore two stars. Even when general ranks were reinstituted in the USSR in 1940, General Majors still had two stars. It was only in 1943 that General Majors started to wear one star.
