Marketing Dictionary: geographic census division

U.S. Bureau of the Census term for a logical division of the U.S., made up of contiguous states, for which census data is attainable. The four main regions are the Northeast, the South, the Midwest, and the West. Each of these regions is further divided as follows: Northeast: Mid-Atlantic-NY, PA, NJ; New England-ME, VT, NH, MA, CT, RI. South: W. South Central-LA, AR, OK, TX; E. South Central-KY, TN, MS, AL; S. Atlantic-MD, DE, DC, WV, VA, NC, SC, GA, FL. Midwest: W. North Central-ND, SD, NE, KS, MN, IA, MO; E. North Central-WI, MI, IL, IN, OH. West: Pacific-CA, WA, OR, HI, AK; Mountain-MT, ID, WY, NV, UT, CO, AZ, NM.

customer profiles can be analyzed in terms of geographic census divisions so that advertisements and direct-mail promotions can be directed to the most appropriate regions and tailored to the characteristics of that population.
