(b Paris, 13 Feb 1843; d Stockholm, 3 March 1923). Swedish painter. He started his artistic education early, taking lessons from J. Arsenius (1818-1903) and, from the age of 12 at the art academy in Stockholm, with C. G. Plageman as his main tutor. The works of the Belgian history painter Hendrik Leys, which he saw at the International Exhibition in London in 1862, were the most important inspiration for his paintings of Swedish history. Sten Sture the Elder's Entry into Stockholm (1864; Stockholm, Nmus.) was his first work in this spirit. There followed journeys to Greece, Turkey, Palestine, Egypt, Italy and France. In Paris, von Rosen studied pictures by Thomas Couture and Paul Delaroche and later L?on Bonnat, after which he refreshed his knowledge of Henry Leys's painting in Brussels between 1867 and 1871. His artistic breakthrough came with Eric XIV (1871; Stockholm, Nmus.), in which he brought a new psychological insight to history painting by emphasizing the King's uncertainty as he decides whether to condemn the rebel Sture brothers. At the same time von Rosen started to paint official portraits, the most famous being The Explorer A. E. Nordenski?ld (1886; Stockholm, Nmus.). Among von Rosen's most famous works is the Symbolist The Sphinx (1887-1907; Stockholm, Nmus.).
