George Clinton Densmore Odell

American Theater Guide: George Clinton Densmore Odell

Odell, George C[linton] D[ensmore] (1866–1949), historian. Born in Newburgh, New York, he was educated at Columbia, where he succeeded Brande Matthews as Professor of Dramatic Literature in 1924. He is best remembered for his Annals of the New York Stage (1927–49), a fifteen‐volume set covering the history of New York theatre from its beginnings to mid‐1894. The work is detailed, accurate, and written with great personal warmth and remains the definitive study of the 18th‐ and 19th‐century New York stage.
