George Hurrell

Biography

With his flair for lighting and his rare ability to photograph Hollywood's greatest stars at their glamorous best while simultaneously capturing their more elusive qualities, photographer George Hurrell was an important figure in promoting the Hollywood movie star mystique to fans all over the world. He got his start in Tinseltown photographing actor Ramon Novarro dressed in shining armor standing beside a white horse. Novarro was pleased and lined Hurrell up to photograph actress Norma Shearer, who wanted to quit being typecast as an innocent buttercup and prove to her husband Irving Thalberg that she could be sexy and sophisticated. Hurrell's photographs did the trick. Primarily working for MGM, Hurrell put the shine in some of the studio's biggest stars including Gable, Veronica Lake, Jane Russell and Joan Crawford. Though he was best known for his black-and-white photographs, Hurrell was equally adept at color photography. He continued photographing stars, such as Arnold Schwarzenegger through the late '80s. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi
