George Washington Smith
(b East Liberty, PA, 22 Feb 1876; d Montecito, Santa Barbara, CA, 16 March 1930). American architect. He studied architecture at Harvard University but for financial reasons was not able to complete his degree. After leaving, he worked as an architectural draughtsman for the firm of Newman, Woodman & Harris (Frank E. Newman, fl 1898-?1919; Henry Gillete Woodman, 1873-1902; James Russell Harris, 1874-1936) in Philadelphia but left the architectural profession to become a successful stockbroker. In 1912 he went to Paris, where he intended to paint, working with such painters as George Bellows and Robert Henri; he also developed a strong admiration for the paintings of Paul C?zanne, which he insisted provided the basis for his architecture.
