Biography

French cinematographer Georges Périnal was an innovative and distinguished lighting cameraman during the early years of European sound film. He began working in the French film industry in 1913, but did not earn recognition until the mid-'20s for his collaboration with Grémillon on a series of short films. By the 1930s, he was an established director of photography noted for his work with René Clair. In 1933, Périnal was working in London with Alexander Korda. He remained there and went on to film many distinguished British movies. For his photography of The Thief of Baghdad (1940), he won an Academy Award. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide
