Geoworks has decided the high-tech business doesn't work. The company, which is liquidating its assets, provided software design and engineering services primarily to manufacturers of mobile and handheld devices. Its software integration work centered around its AirBoss application platform, a system for providing mobile Internet connectivity. Unable to gain momentum, the company announced plans in 2002 to sell its services unit and liquidate its remaining assets. Investing $325,000, Dallas-based Newcastle Partners took a stake of about 25% in the company in 2003. Geoworks had derived revenue from a contract with Toshiba that ran out in 2004; the company is looking for a buyer or a partner.
