Germanic tribe who occupied the middle Danube area and who led a revolt against Attila's sons during the 450s ad. During the 6th century ad the Gepids fought a series of wars against their neighbours the Lombards which ended in their decisive defeat. The surviving Gepids were swallowed up by the Avars after 568.
