Gevrey-Chambertin

Wine Lover's Companion: Gevrey-Chambertin

[zhuh-VRUH (zhuh-VRAY) shahm-behr-TAN] Located in France's burgundy region, this famous village is in the northern part (the côte de nuits) of the côte d'or district. It's one of the larger villages in this acclaimed area and contains approximately 1,460 vineyard acres, all focused on producing red wines from pinot noir grapes. At the top-quality level are the village's eight grand cru vineyards-chambertin, chambertin-clos de bèze, chappelle-chambertin, charmes-chambertin, griotte-chambertin, latricières-chambertin, mazis-chambertin and ruchottes-chambertin. mazoyères-chambertin was sometimes used, but it has the same vineyard area as Charmes-Chambertin, and the latter appellation is generally used. The Chambertin grand cru is so famous that the village, formerly called simply Gevrey, added Chambertin to its name in 1847. Following the grands crus in descending order of quality are the premier cru vineyards, which are followed by the Gevrey-Chambertin AC and then the Côte de Nuits AC. Several premiers crus are thought to deserve grand cru status (if there's ever a reevaluation) including Clos Saint-Jacques, Combe aux Moines, Les Cazetiers, and Les Verroilles. As with much of Burgundy, top producers from premier cru vineyards often turn out better wines than the less-accomplished winemakers from grand cru vineyards. In sharp contrast to the highly rated red wines from the large grouping of grands crus and premiers crus, some critics think that, of all the Côte d'Or villages, Gevrey-Chambertin AC produces wines that are the most widely varying in quality. Many of their lower-quality wines are pale and flavorless.

Geography

Gevrey-Chambertin is one of the wine villages of the Côte de Nuits which lies along the foot of the Cote-d'Or escarpment, to the south of Dijon and with the broad Saône valley plain to its east. It produces red Burgundy wine from vineyards at the village, Premier Cru and Grand Cru level.

This satellite photograph shows Gevrey Chambertin in its context. The village is just to the north of centre. The strip of vineyards on the slope of the Côte d'Or lies north and south in the centre while to its west is the woodland on the Jurassic limestone hills. In the plain of the Saône to the east, the large fields are visible. The curving line is the autoroute, A31. To the west of this, the straight line through the village is the railway from Dijon to the South with a large marshalling yard (Gevrey-Triage). The north-south line of property boundaries to the east of the A31 appears to be the line of a Roman road from Dijon to the southern end of the Forest of Cîteaux, to the south of the abbey.
