Ghir al Baroud

Album Review: Ghir al Baroud

Review

This stunning new recording appears from the Bessie Smith of rai. Aside from the sheer splendor of the performance, its flute-and-percussion backing is the "missing link" between urban styles like chaabi and the electronic rai of the new generation. The controlled emotional charge of this anti-establishment music comes with a subdued humor, but the overriding effect is of power. ~ John Storm Roberts, All Music Guide
