Giel Beelen

Michiel Antonius Adrianus Beelen, better known as Giel Beelen en Diederik Wortelvink (born in Haarlem, on 25 May 1977) is a Dutch radio-dj and presentator. Currently he presents the VARA morning show GIEL at 3FM from Monday till Friday between 6:00 and 10:00 am. He also has a show called Nachtegiel at Saturday morning between 1:00 and 4:00 am, at the so-called Freaknacht ("Freak night").

He also presents the VARA extreme participation (grammar) TV show Factor giel and a TV talkshow called GielTV. In one part he and the interviewed person are naked (but largely this amounts to showing the bare shoulders).

Career

From an early age, Beelen was determined to become a disc jockey. When he was just a little kid, he made himself a mock radio station to pretend he was a dj. After starting at a local Haarlem broadcasting company, presenting a show for kids, he soon moved to Radio 10 Gold and later to Radio Noordzee to work as an engineer.

In 1997 Beelen moved to the AVRO at Radio 3FM, where he hosted a show during night time. In his show 'Beelen voor je bek/ 'Beelen for your mouth', Giel ordered a callgirl, who performed fellatio on him live in the studio.

After the AVRO, he goes to the KRO in 2001, where he was, later on, dismissed, because they had a misunderstanding about Mein Kampf about Adolf Hitler. After that he goes to the VARA for a short time, there he was again, dismissed. Then he goes to the NPS (Dutch Programme Foundation), to present GigaGiel and Hard en Giel.

In Oktober 2003 he won a Dutch Marconi Award, for best radiomaker of 2003.

Since 2004 Giel moved from the NPS, back to the VARA, to presents his morning show 'GIEL!' and his Friday Nightshow, Nachtegiel as part of 'The Friday Freak night'. The Friday Freak night has also, Ekdom in de nacht ('Ekdom in the night'), presented by Gerard Ekdom, between 4.00 and 7.00 am.

In 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2008 he lived in the House of Glass (Het Glazen Huis) a week prior to Christmas without anything to eat to collect money for projects supported by the Red Cross in a show called Serious Request.
