Gigi Meroni (1944-1967) was an Italian football player in the Torino team. He died at the age of 24 in a car crash in Corso Re Umberto, on the corner with Via Legnano. He was a “butterfly” on the field, at the stadium in Piazza d’Armi, a first-rate dribbler and expert at nutmegging (threading the ball through an opponent's legs). He was also a painter, with a studio in Piazza Vittorio. He played as if drawing straight lines and curls, splashes of red and black on the green grass. He was killed by a car driven by one of his greatest fans, a twist of fate all the more unexpected and brutal.
Meroni played for Genoa from 1962-64 and for Torino from 1964-67. He broke into the Italian national side in 1966. His style and ability has led to comparisons with George Best. The tragedy of his early death denied Torino its first scudetto since Superga. His funeral was attended by 20,000 supporters.
