Biography

British cinematographer Gilbert Taylor started out at age 15 as a camera assistant. He did not become a full-fledged lighting director until the late '40s. Back then he was known for his facility with both color and black-and-white photography and his versatility. Excellent examples of Taylor's work can be found in Dr. Strangelove (1964), Hard Day's Night, and MacBeth (1971). Gil Taylor, B.S.C. (born 12 April 1914) in Bushey Heath, Hertfordshire, England, is a cinematographer.

After six years service during World War II as an officer in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, he became an Operational Cameraman flying in Avro Lancaster bombers, documenting the damage after British bombing raids.

He worked on a number of films noted for their stylish cinematography, notably Dr. Strangelove and A Hard Day's Night.
