Caron, Gilles (1939-70), prolific and legendary French photojournalist, who joined the Gamma agency soon after it was founded in 1967. In the next three years, in the words of a colleague, he covered conflicts ‘absolutely everywhere’, including the Six Day War, Biafra, Prague, and Ireland. Especially memorable were his images of students and riot police in Paris in May 1968. In April 1970, by now a hero and role model for the post-Capa generation of war photographers, he disappeared near Phnom Penh, Cambodia. He was commemorated by his friend Raymond Depardon in Gilles Caron, grand reporter (1978).
