Gilwern is a village in Monmouthshire, Wales. The name is translated from the Welsh language as "the nook near the alder grove".

Location

It is situated within the Llanelly parish ward of Monmouthshire County Council, 4 miles (6.4 km) from the market town of Abergavenny.

Attractions

Gilwern stands on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park. The local area has a history of iron production. The Monmouthshire and Brecon canal, which flows through Gilwern, was built to transport coal and coke to service the Clydach ironworks.

Gilwern Hill lies to the south of the village.
