An order of nearly extinct gymnosperms (Pinophyta) having only one living species, the maidenhair tree (Ginkgo biloba). The fan-shaped leaves resemble those of the maidenhair fern. The leaves are dichotomously veined (fork-veined) and often more or less lobed. The species is dioecious; that is, the male and female reproductive structures occur on separate trees. Ginkgo is widely planted on street borders, on home grounds, and in city parks. See also Pinophyta.
