Giovanni Battista Marino

French Literature Companion: Giovanni Battista Marino

Marino, Giovanni Battista (1569-1625). Italian poet who in 1615 took refuge in France, where he was known as ‘le cavalier Marin’. His long poem Adone (Adonis), written in French, and published in 1623 with a preface by Chapelain, was much admired. ‘Le marinisme’ was the name given to a style of poetry characterized by its display of verbal wit.
