Plot

The confessional, behind-the-scenes showbiz melodrama goes under the knife -- so to speak -- in this drag comedy. Girls Will Be Girls casts three male performers in the roles of Evie Harris (Jack Plotnick), a has-been starlet of the '70s who has since gone to seed in her decaying Hollywood home; her best friend and domestic servant, Coco (Clinton Leupp); and Varla (Jeffrey Roberson), the daughter of a deceased peer/rival of Evie's who shows up to rent out a room in her home. The tension among the trio of women escalates as Evie prepares for a pull-out-all-the-stops television special commemorating her past career glories, which include sundry disaster movies and TV variety shows. What Evie doesn't know is that the naïve-seeming Varla has a debt to settle for her deceased mom, and will stop at nothing to seek vengeance. All three lead actors developed their characters in stage shows and cabaret acts; writer/director Richard Day wrote for such television shows as Ellen and The Larry Sanders Show before helming this film, his debut. After its 2003 Sundance premiere, Girls Will Be Girls was acquired by IFC Films for a theatrical release. ~ Michael Hastings, All Movie Guide

Girls Will Be Girls is a 2003 film directed by Richard Day.

The film spoofs several films with Hollywood as a subject, including Sunset Boulevard, All About Eve, What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, Mommie Dearest and Valley of the Dolls.

One of the notable aspects of the film is that all three of the main characters—Evie, Coco and Varla—have existed "on their own" for years prior to the movie. The characters are alter egos of the actors, who created these characters and performed under their drag alter egos for several years. The movie places all three in a narrative situation together.

Plot

Evie Harris (Jack Plotnick) is a washed-up, alcoholic, aging C-List actress (star of kinetoscope, stage, television, and film in such works as the TV special "Christmas Evie," vaudeville-era appearances promoting 'Dr. Vim's Miracle Elixir,' "Court TV: Celebrities Who Kill," Tabitha (TV series) and the sad '70s disaster epic Asteroid [tagline: 'Earth Might Get Crushed!']). She lives in a tackily out-of-style bungalow with Coco (Clinton Leupp), a homely, lonely, doormat of a spinster who carries a torch for the handsome young doctor who performed her abortion years ago.

Evie's life is turned upside-down by the arrival of a new roommate, Varla Simonds (Jeffery Roberson), the voracious, starry-eyed daughter of Evie's rival, late actress Marla Simonds (whose claims to fame included playing Chesty on "Fill Her Up," the short-lived but widely acclaimed spinoff of "C.P.O. Sharkey," and almost being cast as the lead in "Asteroid" before Evie captured that "breakout" role). Evie acts very competitive around Varla, especially as she recognizes the growing chemistry between the young up-and-comer and her sweet, handsome and microscopically endowed son and "ambulance chasing" lawyer, Stevie (Ron Mathews). When Varla snags a plum starring role in commercials for "Bizzy Gal dinners" (which are TV dinners rendered chemically unstable to simulate heat, whose warning label declares that "possible side effects of consumption include cancer, bleeding, enlargement of the heart, and second degree burns along the rectal cavity resulting in irreversible incontinence") tensions and jealousies amongst the three women reach a boiling point and treachery soon rears its ugly head.

Coco has divorced her husband and moved back in with Evie, and is going through life as a single mother. Early in the series, Varla is experiencing a backlash of fame: she is being stalked by someone she considers undesirable.
