Review

This is an enjoyable compilation of Andy Kirk and His Clouds of Joy spotlighting the years 1936-1937. Seven out of the 15 tracks are by Mary Lou Williams, one of the main elements of this big band throughout its history. Williams was not only the band's pianist, but she also contributed arrangements and penned several compositions. Included on this budget release from the graffiti label are the Williams compositions "Git," "Lotta Sax Appeal," "Walkin' and Swingin'," and "Bearcat Shuffle." This is a good retrospective of two important years from this influential big band. ~ Al Campbell, All Music Guide
