(b Lucera, Foggia, 29 Nov 1904; d Senigallia, 25 Oct 1961). Italian photographer and writer. He graduated in law from the University of Rome in 1926 and practised as a lawyer in Rome (1926-35). He was self-taught as a photographer. From 1935 to his death he worked as a freelance photographer in Senigallia. He was a founding member of three photographic groups of great importance in the theoretical debate on photography in Italy, the Gruppo degli Otto (1941), La Bussola (Senigallia, 1947) and the Gruppo MISA (1953). He was the recipient of numerous international awards and was one of the most important figures in Italian photography between 1940 and 1955.
