(b Bologna, 20 Sept 1685; d there, 1751). Italian composer. He played the violin at S Petronio, Bologna, and was several times president of the Accademia Filarmonica. He composed chiefly instrumental works; his concertos, which had the most success (particularly in England), were among the first by an Italian to show Vivaldi's direct influence.
