Review

For Tim Armstrong of Rancid, the meeting point of punk and reggae isn't merely music, it's a way of life, and it continues to be the guiding philosophy of both his band and his record label, Hellcat Records. The third installment in Hellcat's budget-priced sampler series, Give 'Em the, Vol. 3 offers up plenty of fast-n-loud punk rock action with hot tracks from the Distillers, Dropkick Murphys, U.S. Bombs, Leftover Crack, the Nerve Agents, and Duane Peters and the Hunns (as you might expect, Rancid also drops by, as does Lars Frederiksen's solo project); a healthy side portion of roots-conscious reggae and ska from Hepcat, the Pietasters, King Django, and the Slackers; and a few cuts that have a foot in both camps from Mouthwash and the Gadjits. Give 'Em the Boot, Vol. 3 has a higher punk rock quotient than the first two installments in the series, and the compilers have opted not to juggle styles as they did on earlier albums (in short, if you just wanna rock, shut off your CD player after track 14, and cut 15 is where the roots-conscious listeners should set in), but if you're looking for quality sounds for either pogoing or easy skanking, Give 'Em the Boot, Vol. 3 offers a whole lot of value for a five spot. ~ Mark Deming, All Music Guide
