Ysgol Glan-y-Môr School is a mixed, community comprehensive school of around 650 pupils, catering for all abilities
across an age range of 11 to 16. It is a fine school with a deep sense of pride in the achievements of all its members and an
emphasis on high standards of work, behaviour, attitude and appearance.
The school is situated at the heart of the town of Burry Port, though pupils are drawn from
the coastal strip extending from Pwll, through Burry Port and Pembrey to Kidwelly, and inland to Mynydd-y-Garreg and Trimsaran. Approximately 30% of the pupils live within walking distance of the campus but the majority are
bussed in from a catchment area consisting of small towns and villages

What Glan-y-Môr provides for pupils
Entitlement
A quality education in an environment where expectations are high and all achievements are valued. Glan-y-Môr aims to develop
independent thinking, self-discipline, confidence and motivation. Glan-y-Môr provides challenging experiences that take account
of individual needs and aptitudes. In order to do excellence in teaching and learning.
Empowerment
Glan-y-Môr helps pupils to reach their maximum potential in all areas and equip them with the knowledge, skills and values to
help them take their place as responsible, well-rounded, caring members of society. Glan-y-Môr encourages a strong sense of
personal and social responsibility, and high moral standards. In order to do this, Glan-y-Môr aim to give their pupils high
expectations of themselves and for them to be ambitious so that they can succeed and cope in the rapidly changing outside
world.
Enjoyment
Glan-y-Môr enable pupils to enjoy their education by creating a sense of family and engaging them as willing learners and
fulfilled citizens. Glan-y-Môr aim to provide a safe, well-disciplined and friendly environment for work and learning. Glan-y-Môr
encourages mutual respect, integrity, honesty, loyalty, team-work, community spirit and pride in one's appearance. In order to do
this, Glan-y-Môr aim to develop a strong partnership between staff, pupils, parents and carers, and the woder community, with
high levels of commitment and support from all.[1]
Outside Praise
Glan-y-Môr has recently received praise from a number of sources
- Schools in and around Carmarthenshire have raised more than £8,000 to help children living in slums around the world. Local schools joined forces with almost 300 others around the country to participate in a special sporting event to raise much needed cash. The Schoolchildren for Children charity event held last September raised £8,134.05...Glan-y-Môr School's contribution was £1000[2]
- Glan-y-Môr takes part annually in the University of Wales, Lampeter's Expanding Horizons programme. This is designed to support and help young people aged 15 and 16 to achieve at least a grade C or above in the core curriculum subjects of Maths, English, Science and Welsh in their GCSEs. Glan-y-Môr supply around 20 students to take part in the revision sessions. The Revision Week is provided at no cost to the students (not even for study materials and books etc.) as the programme is supported by the West and Mid Wales Widening Access Partnership, European Union Social Fund and Scottish Power Learning.[3]
- A school has appointed a full-time 'agony aunt' to help pupils deal with problems such as bullying, relationships and stress. Glan-y-Mor Comprehensive in Burry Port is among the first in Wales to offer such a service and the move has won the backing of a leading children's charity...Cordula Bellan of Childline said: "Most schools really try hard to meet the emotional needs of pupils today. It's a good thing to have an independent person in a school to offer counselling...I think many schools will be interested in following this (Glan-y-Mor)."[4]
