Biography

A veteran of the Australian music industry, singer/songwriter Glenn Shorrock has had a long and successful career in the U.K. and Australia spanning more than three decades. Arriving in Australia with his family from England during the mid-'50s, Shorrock soon developed a passion for rock & roll and formed the vocal quartet the Checkmates. Under the influence of the Beatles after they achieved popularity in Australia, the Checkmates became the Twilights and from 1964 to 1969 had several hit singles in Australia. After they broke up, Shorrock spent three months managing the Australian group, the Avengers. In May 1969, Shorrock joined the supergroup Axiom in the U.K. until their breakup in 1971. Shorrock signed a solo deal with the MAM record label and released three singles.

In 1972, Shorrock joined the 12-piece international rock orchestra Esperanto. Their debut album, Esperanto Rock Orchestra, was released in 1973. Shorrock made a minimal contribution to their next release, Danse Macabre, and by their third release in 1974, Last Tango, had taken on a management role. The band had little success and Shorrock left to sing backup vocals for Cliff Richard. In October 1975, Shorrock returned to Australia where he formed the Little River Band. LRB's long run of success only came to an end after Shorrock decided to leave in February 1982, to be replaced by another Australian stalwart, John Farnham.

Shorrock already had a Top Ten single with Bobby Darin's "Dream Lover" back in 1979, and recorded his debut album, Villian of the Peace, in L.A. In late 1982, Shorrock toured Australia and also sang on Renee Geyer's single "Going Back." He recorded another single with the Bushwackers, "We're Coming to Get You," which reached number six on the national charts in October 1983. His next single, "Restless," appeared on the soundtrack to the documentary film World Safari II. Shorrock compared ABC-TV's Rock Arena in 1986 and released his next single "American Flyer." He also toured with the stage show One for the Money. In 1988, Shorrock rejoined the Little River Band for the next three years. In 1991, he was inducted into the Australian Record Industry (ARIA) Hall of Fame. In 1993, he formed the Blazing Salads with Brian Cadd and they released a self-titled album in the same year. ~ Brendan Swift, All Music Guide

Career

Glenn Shorrock originally came to fame in Australia, as the co-lead singer of popular '60s band The Twilights. They scored major Australian hits with singles including "Needle In A Haystack", and their definitive cover of The Hollies' "What's Wrong With The Way I Live", which was recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London. Boasting two lead singers, two guitarists and five vocalists, the Twilights were renowned for their ability to perform note-perfect covers of songs by almost any pop-rock act of the day, and were famed for their live prowess; they were also one of the few Australian "pop" bands of the day who were both popular with teenage audiences, and respected by fellow musicians. In 1967, shortly after returning from London, the group were regularly performing the entire Sgt Pepper's album live, in sequence, as part of their set, well before it was released in Australia.

After The Twilights split in early 1969, Shorrock joined the early Australian 'supergroup' Axiom with Brian Cadd (ex-The Groop) and members of other leading Australian pop groups. Although Axiom lasted only a couple of years, they had several Australian hits and recorded two highly acclaimed LPs.

Shorrock remained in the UK after the split of Axiom, and during this time he performed with the multinational band Esperanto. In late 1974, just before returning to Australia, he was invited to join a new lineup of Mississippi, an Australian band then working in England. He joined the group as lead singer, and soon after they returned to Australia they changed their name to Little River Band. The group went on to become one of the most successful bands ever to come out of Australia, and the first Australian group to achieve major commercial success in the United States.

Glenn Shorrock left Little River Band in 1982 and was replaced as lead singer by John Farnham. He released a solo album "Villain of the Peace" but he did not achieve the international success he had attained with Little River Band. Shorrock returned to the band in 1988 but, despite several quality albums, the band did not regain its earlier stellar recognition. He left the band again in 1996.

Among his many talents, Glenn Shorrock has appeared in numerous stage shows (including his own showcase productions One for the Money, Go Cat Go and Two Up), hosted radio and television programs and continued to write and record. There is strong demand for his corporate and event performances, and he regularly tours his career-spanning Reminiscing show, either solo or with invited guest singers.

In 2002 Shorrock reunited with other Little River Band founders Beeb Birtles and Graeham Goble and formed Birtles Shorrock Goble, the original voices and songwriters of Little River Band. They have recorded a successful DVD and CD ("Full Circle") and continue to tour regularly.

2007 saw the release of the first Glenn Shorrock CD for seven years. He has recorded acoustic versions of his career hits for release on the Liberation Blue label.

In August-September 2007, Shorrock appeared alongside Beeb Birtles and Graeham Goble at the Countdown Spectacular 2 concert series. They played a medley of their Little River Band hits.

In 2008 Shorrock is touring with the musical Shout!, based on the life of Australian rocker Johnny O'Keefe. He also plans to continue working on his autobiography. [1]
