When US troops or US tour groups are sent overseas, Global Aviation Holdings (formerly Global Aero Logistics) helps them reach their destinations. The holding company, which operates through subsidiaries World Airways and North American Airlines, provides military and commercial charter passenger services. In addition, the carriers lease cargo aircraft under ACMI (an acronym for aircraft, crew, maintenance, and insurance) contracts. Together, Global Aviation's carriers maintain a fleet of more than 30 jets. A third subsidiary, ATA Airlines, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2008 and ceased operations. Investment firm MatlinPatterson owns a controlling stake in Global Aviation Holdings.
