(anatomy) The muscle of the buttocks lying between the gluteus maximus and gluteus minimus.

A thick buttock muscle covered by the gluteus maximus. Its origin is on the lateral, posterior surface of the ilium, and its insertion is on the lateral aspect of the greater trochanter of the femur. Its primary actions are abduction and medial rotation of the femur.
