With the demise of most of the giant British superclubs during 2001-2002, a new breed of club -- as focused on artists making records as clubbers making scenes -- took its place, led by the Birmingham-based Godskitchen. The club's first self-released collection, after half-a-dozen through other labels, is a three-disc extravaganza with a separate set for each time: 11:00 pm, 1:00 am, and 3:00 am. Compiled and researched by respected dance figure John "00" Fleming, the record is a solid balance of artistically controlled and populist demanded. The two specialties at Godskitchen, breaks and continental trance, are each given plenty of space, the first with an opener by Hybrid as well as a Push remix of Moby's "In This World" and the Body Schock anthem "Rock This House." Teutonic, heavily Belgian trance gets the most room of all, with tracks from Umek, Tiësto (including a few co-productions), Armin van Buuren, Cygnus X, and Fleming himself. Much more involved and clever than any of the dozens of Ministry of Sound compilations now gathering dust, and a good look at what's to come in the state of British dance. ~ John Bush, All Music GuideTracks
