Goliad

Place Names: Goliad
  • Location: Texas/USA
  • Variant names: Nuestra Señora del Espíritu Santo Zuñiga
The Spanish mission 'Our Lady of the Holy Spirit of Zuniga' was established in 1749. The present name of the historical site, in use since 1829, is said to be an anagram of (H)idalgo after Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla (1753–1811), a priest revered as the father of Mexican independence. However, it is possible that the name comes from the biblical Goliath.
