Review

When ironies are as delicious as punk-pop quartet Good Charlotte turning into the very thing they parodied on their career-making hit, "Lifestyles of the Rich and the Famous," it's hard to resist the temptation to repeat the story, no matter how often it's been said. After all, it is true. Good Charlotte succumbed to every temptation fame has to offer and turned into L.A. scenester frat-rats, which, in turn, turned them into gossip-blog fodder as lead singer Joel Madden dated teen queens and super-skinny celebs whose main claim to fame was being famous. It's a textbook rock & roll cliché, and now that the apex of their popularity is beginning to recede into the past, they've fallen back on another textbook rock & roll cliché for their fourth album, 2007's Good Morning Revival: desperate trend-chasing. True, the group was beginning to stretch out on their first post-fame album, 2004's The Chronicles of Life and Death, but where that found the group getting a little more ambitious, Good Morning Revival -- released a full five years after their breakthrough, The Young and the Hopeless -- demonstrates that they now have real concerns about appearing fashionable, so they've adopted the two main rock trends that surfaced since 2002: dance-punk and '80s fetishism. They've morphed from blink-182 into the Killers, a stylistic makeover that makes Madden's swipes at the "plastic people" of Hollywood on the opening "Misery" ring a little hollow since his sudden pursuit of glam style seems like the epitome of L.A. emptiness. To be sure, the icy synth textures and guitar atmospherics borrowed from the Edge are the foundation of this album, but Good Charlotte aren't content to just restrict themselves to tricks they learned from the Killers; they sample from a wide spectrum of sounds and bands from the last five years. There's the pounding electro-disco of Rapture-lite "Dance Floor Anthem," which feels like it should be ironic, but isn't. There's the Blur/Gorillaz-aping "Keep Your Hands Off My Girl" -- its chanting verse borrowed from "We Got a Line on You," the hook from "Song 2," its beat from the Gorillaz -- and there's the Coldplay-esque shimmer of "Where Would We Be Now," complete with the finishing touch of piano arpeggio. This kind of calculating changeup would have worked better if the band had the hooks or the good sense to embrace their crass pandering so it's good trashy fun; if they signaled that they knew how ridiculous this shift in direction was, it'd be easier to enjoy. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

Good Morning Revival is the fourth studio album by Good Charlotte and the follow up to the 2004 release The Chronicles of Life and Death. It is the first album to feature Dean Butterworth on drums, who joined the band in March 2007 after former drummer Chris Wilson departed in 2005. Billy Martin has mentioned in an interview that Benji Madden came up with the name for the album.[1] The sound of Good Morning Revival has more of an alternative rock style than the previous Good Charlotte albums. This style can be heard in the albums third single, "Dance Floor Anthem (I Don't Want to Be in Love)", which is the most successful song on the album by debuting at #2 on the Australian charts and reaching #25 on the Billboard Hot 100.[2]

Delay of release date

Originally, guitarist Billy Martin mentioned on his blog on the band's website that the album would hopefully be out for Christmas 2006. However the album's original release date was June 2006, but was pushed back numerous times before confirmed on the band's website. The release was pushed back to October, after which it was pushed back further to February 2007. Lead singer Joel Madden said in an interview with MuchMusic that the album release has been pushed back once more to March 5, 2007.[3] On December 6, 2006, the band's website said that the album will now be released March 20, 2007. Days later the band posted a new message on their website saying that the album will be released March 27, 2007.

Internet releases

On Good Charlotte's website, Benji Madden posted a video and announced that the song "Keep Your Hands Off My Girl" would be posted on the band's MySpace. The song premiered September 22, 2006 online and it became available to hear at the band's MySpace account and at the official Good Charlotte website. Later, a video for the song was posted in the band's MySpace page on October 26, 2006. The first single from the album, "The River", featuring Avenged Sevenfold's lead singer, M. Shadows and guitarist Synyster Gates, appeared online January 4, 2007.

At midnight, on January 23, 2007 the forthcoming record was made available for preorder on iTunes. When pre-ordered, "The River" is downloaded immediately, while the rest of the album is queued to be downloaded on the released date. Preordering on iTunes also provides the exclusive bonus version of the aforementioned single, and a music video of an acoustic session of the song, "Misery". An acoustic version of "March On" could be downloaded through the band's provided that you registered as a member. In addition to the tracks listed below, if bought at Wal-Mart, 5 exclusive songs from their Soundstage performance can be downloaded.

Reception

Initial critical response to Good Morning Revival ranged from average to negative. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album has received an average score of 45, based on 18 reviews.[4]

B-sides

The band mentioned that they created over 60 B-sides for the album. Only three of them were released as bonus tracks on Good Morning Revival bought in certain stores. They also mentioned that they weren't happy with most of the tracks so they made more. Most of the songs that made it on the album were songs they made last. On May 1st, 2009, Benji Madden posted "No Communication" on the Good Charlotte official website stating that it was a song they made while working on "Good Morning Revival". [5]
