(b London, 5 July 1895; d Saffron Walden, 8 June 1984). English composer. He studied with Stanford and Howells at the RCM and taught there (1926-66). He composed mostly orchestral and chamber music in a traditional style, and was drawn to wind instruments, for which he wrote concertos. He also wrote several textbooks on instrumentation.
