Gotemba (御殿場市 Gotenba-shi, sometimes Gotenba), is a city located on the southeastern flank of Mt. Fuji in Shizuoka, Japan.
As of 2009, the city has an estimated population of 89,001 and the density of 457 persons per km². The total area is 194.63 km².
The city was founded on February 11, 1955. Located at an altitude of 250–600 meters, the city has a cool climate, characterized by high rainfall (average 3433 mm per year). The city initially developed due to its location on the Tōkaidō Main Line railway. During the pre-war era, it was a major base area for the Imperial Japanese Army, and still houses military facilities and a large training area for the modern Japanese Ground Self-Defense Force. In modern times, it has profited through its location on the Tōmei Expressway and is noted for a number of golf courses and large outlet shopping centers.
History
Gotemba was the site of a shōen belonging to Ise Shrine in the Heian period. During the Edo period it was part of Odawara Domain. After the start of the Meiji period, it became part of Shizuoka Domain until the abolition of the han system in 1871.
- February 1, 1889 - Opening of Gotemba Station on the Tōkaidō Main Line.
- April 1, 1889 - Establishment of municipalities in Suntō District: Gotemba Town, Fujioka Village, Harasato Village, Ino Village, Tamaho Village, Takane Village.
- 1914 - Gotemba Town changes kanji of its name to present form.
- December 1, 1934 - Opening of Tanna Tunnel causes route of Tōkaidō Main Line to shift south to Atami, leaving Gotemba on the spur Gotemba Line and causing temporary depopulation.
- February 11, 1955 - Gotemba City created through merger of Gotemba Town with Fujioka Village, Harasato Village, Ino Village, and Tamaho Village.
- January 1, 1956 - Takane Village merges with Gotemba City
- September 1, 1957 - Gotemba Town expands through acquisition of Furusawa District of Oyama Town.
- May 25, 1969 - Gotemba Interchange on Tōmei Expressway completed.
