(b Rosenthal, 2 Feb 1714; d Dresden, 2 June 1785). German composer, organist and Kantor. A pupil of Bach, he was organist at the Frauenkirche, Dresden, from 1742; from 1755 he also worked at the Kreuzkirche and the Sophienkirche. With J. F. Doles, he was the leading German Protestant composer of his day, writing c60 motets, over 200 sacred cantatas and Magnificats, Passion music and oratorios. Though rooted in Baroque style, they increasingly show pre-Classical traits such as homophony, simple melodies and expressive devices. Also significant are his chorale preludes and other organ pieces, which combine the contrapuntal styles of Bach and Pachelbel with more modern features.
