Art Encyclopedia: Govardhan

( fl c. 1596-1640). Indian miniature painter. The son of Bhavani Das, a minor painter in the Mughal imperial atelier, Govardhan began his career during the reign of Akbar (reg 1556-1605), developed into a mature master painter under Jahangir (reg 1605-27) and continued to produce outstanding paintings well into the reign of Shah Jahan (reg 1628-58). He is known mainly for his many depictions of Indian ascetics.
