Government Offices for the English Regions (GOs) are the primary means by which a wide range of policies and programmes of the Government of the United Kingdom are delivered in the regions of England. GOs act for Government in the regions and localities, and act for regions and localities in Government. There are nine regional Government Offices and together they form the Government Office Network.[1]

They represent twelve Whitehall departments, and are involved in regenerating communities, fighting crime, tackling housing needs, improving public health, raising standards in education and skills, tackling countryside issues, and reducing unemployment.

Government Offices take a cross-departmental approach to the delivery of policy in the regions. GOs support projects that cut across the agendas of their sponsor departments and develop strong links with local stakeholders to help ensure policy is delivered on the ground. They also have a key role in overseeing contingency planning, so Government can respond to large-scale emergencies in an integrated way.
