Career

Born as Grace Boyle, Stafford is best-known for providing the voice of Woody Woodpecker, from 1950 until 1990. It was not until 1958, with the cartoon Misguided Missile, that she received credit, as she had always thought that children would be disillusioned if they knew Woody was voiced by a woman.[citation needed] Walter Lantz always insisted that his wife had submitted her audition tape for the role anonymously, and was cast before her he knew that it was she.[citation needed]

As Grace Stafford, she appeared in small roles in feature films (Anthony Adverse, Blossoms In the Dust).

Stafford was replaced by Cherry Davis in Who Framed Roger Rabbit as role of Woody.

Death

Gracie Lantz died in 1992 from spinal cancer, aged 88.
