(mechanics) A unit of force in the centimeter-gram-second gravitational system, equal to the gravitational force on a 1-gram mass at a specified location. Abbreviated gf. Also known as fors; gram-weight; pond.

mechanics. Symbols gf, g-f, pond. (Metric) The force represented by 1 gram of mass subject to standard gravity, i.e.

1 g-f = 1 g × 980.665 cm·s-2 = 980.665 dyn = 9.806 65 mN.
This was a base unit of the gravitational system created from the normal c.g.s. system (in which the gram is mass and the dyne the unit of force).

Unit of force; the pull of the Earth on a gram mass. A gram weight varies slightly according to the acceleration of free fall at different points on the Earth, but a force of 1 g weight equals approximately 981 dynes.
