Grand Detour, Illinois is an unincorporated village in Ogle County, Illinois, United States. The village is named because of an odd turn in the Rock River. Grand Detour is the site where John Deere invented the first successful steel plow. Many of the village's initial residents came from Vermont, and in the early years of the 20th century many artists were known to live here.[citation needed] It is said that Orson Welles spent several summers here as a youth at a relative's hotel.[citation needed] Stan Hack (Chicago Cubs manager and player) had a restaurant in town.[citation needed]
