Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories

Games: Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories

Game Description

Submit to the seedy streets of Vice City in this portable prequel to the top-selling PlayStation 2 game of 2002. British developer Rockstar Leeds revisits a familiar open-ended world while creating an original storyline with new missions and design elements. Lance Vance's brother Vic is the game's lead protagonist, and players will follow the ex-soldier in his bid for power and respect in 1984's corrupt, Miami-inspired metropolis.

The mission structure, controls, and perspective are similar to those introduced in 2005's Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, albeit with several notable enhancements. The draw distance has increased, allowing players to see more of their surroundings, the missions are more intricate, and the variety of vehicles has expanded. Players will zip through the narrow streets in various sports cars and motorcycles, take to the air in helicopters or jets, and bob along the water in speedboats or on jet skis.

One of the Grand Theft Auto franchise's distinguishing features is its high production values, and Vice City Stories showcases professional voice acting, cinematic cut-scenes, and radio stations rife with licensed music, satirical commercials, and quirky personalities. More than a dozen '80s era songs include such hits as Dio's "Holy Diver," Ratt's "Round and Round," and Pat Benatar's "We Belong." Multiplayer options offer a mix of cooperative and competitive games playable over an Ad-hoc wireless connection.

History

Take-Two Interactive originally announced the title was to be released in North America on October 17, 2006 and in Europe on October 20, 2006, but an announcement in early September stated that the game's North American release had been delayed until October 31.[1] It was also announced that the game would be released on 10 November 2006 in Australia. Moreover, in Europe (Excluding the UK & Ireland) the game suffered another delay, from November 3, 2006, to November 10, 2006, the same as Australia.

Gameplay

Map of Vice City as depicted in Vice City Stories.

Vice City Stories is structured similarly to other releases from the Grand Theft Auto series.

The core gameplay consists of elements of a third-person shooter and a driving game, affording the player a large, open environment in which to move around. On foot, the player's character is capable of walking, running, swimming and jumping, as well as utilizing weapons and basic hand to hand combat. Players can drive a variety of vehicles, including automobiles, boats, planes, bicycles, helicopters, jetskis, and motorcycles.

The open, non-linear environment allows players to explore and choose how they wish to play the game. Although storyline missions are necessary to progress through the game and unlock certain areas and content, they are not required, as players can complete them at their own leisure. When not taking on a storyline mission, players can free-roam.

The player can also partake in a variety of optional side missions. The traditional side missions of the past games are included, but have been moderately upgraded and enhanced compared to previous titles. A new addition to the game is "Beach Patrol", in which Victor must deal with bikers on the beach by beach buggy (by ramming or shooting to knock them off their bikes) or throwing life preservers to drowning swimmers by boat or by taking a paramedic around to injured people on the beach.

One of the key gameplay elements in Vice City Stories is "empire building." New to the GTA series, it borrows a few ideas from Vice City's "properties" and San Andreas' "gang wars" systems. In order to make money, the player must open and operate various businesses on property taken over from enemy gangs.

For Vice City Stories, the combat system was overhauled to feature more depth than ever before. The targeting mechanism has been tweaked to "intelligently target"; enemies posing a threat or attacking the player will be targeted over pedestrians. The biggest changes concern the hand-to-hand combat system, as players can now perform grappling moves and throws, and stand on top of enemies lying on the ground.

Players are able to bribe policemen or hospital staff when "Wasted" (killed) or "Busted" (arrested) in order to lower their wanted level, and keep weapons that ordinarily would have been lost.

The standard hidden package system returns in the form of 99 red balloons scattered around the city. This is a reference to Nena's 1984 hit "99 Luftballons", which was featured in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.

Improvements to the graphics since the release of Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories include new animations, faster load times, a longer draw distance, reductions in clumping of pedestrians and vehicles, more complex explosions, and increases in the density of objects, vehicles, and NPCs.

Main Plot
The protagonist Victor Vance (left), at Escobar International Airport with his brother Lance (right).

The game is set in 1984, two years before the events of Vice City. Victor "Vic" Vance, the protagonist, is a U.S. Army soldier whose sergeant, Jerry Martinez, gets him involved in drug trafficking, which is strictly against Vic's morals. Soon Vic is dishonorably discharged for the drugs found in his room and bringing a prostitute to the barracks, both of which were intended for Martinez. Vic works for Phil Cassidy]], who is also featured in Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City andGrand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories Phil Cassidy for a time after Martinez puts Vic in contact with him(making Martinez use lude phrases, such as calling Vic "my bitch's bitch)In the mission titled Marked Man, Phil becomes intoxicated and tells Jerry that he no longer trusts him, angering him to the point of tricking both Phill and Victor to go to a lot full of hired assasins. However, Vic and Phil kill the hitmen, and take separate paths on dealing with Martinez. After the mission, Phil puts you in contact with his sister Louise's unruly husband: Marty J. Williams. Marty is loud, arrogant, cocky, and selfish to the point of boldly threatening to inflict injury on Louise and his infant daughter, Mary Jo, in front of company like Vic. He is also the leader of the short lived Trailer Park Mafia gang, consisting of nearly all male residents of the Sunshine Autos trailer park, and members of his own family. While Vic personnaly is disgusted by Marty and his behavior, he still puts in work for him after he scares Louise into moving in with her sister Mary Beth. Vic is introduced to the Loan Shark, Protection Ring, and Prostitution bussiness aspects that are required in the game. Meanwhile, a small romance sparks between Vic and Louise as she hides from Marty. In the mission D.I.V.O.R.C.E., Marty becomes aware of this, and kidnaps Louise to make her one of his prostitutes. But Victor kills Marty before this is succeeded, and later claims his empire. Later, Vic's degenerate brother comes to town in hopes of joining Vic in his conquest. Lance befriends Brian Forbes (unknowing that Forbes was an undercover DEA agent) and together, the three make some money off of selling cocaine. But in the mission Caught As An Act, Lance reveals Forbes and he and Vic hold him hostage(only to later kill him) Lance finds out from Forbes that Jerry Martinez was about to import a massive amount of cocaine, and coaxes Vic into helping him steal it as revenge. Victor agrees, but is uninformed that Martinez was mearly a shepard of the deal for 2 of Vice City's 3 coke kingpins: Armando and Diego Mendez (Riccardo Diaz being the third). In an attempt to pay back the Mendez Brothers, Lance sets up a deal with a Z-List film director Mark Spitz. (Who puts you in contact with Reni Wassulmier) But Lance and Victor return to find the cocaine and their mother Janet, who had been staying with Lance recently, gone. Forcing the two to have to work to pay back the Mendez's in a partnership. After a few missions with the brothers, they expect Lance and Vic to hand over their crime empire and leave the city or die. They refuse, and are taken to a fuel depot to be killed by a firing squad. Miraculously, they escape and declare war on the Mendez's and their gang: The Sharks. To aid their chances, Lance forms a buissiness relation with Riccardo Diaz, who personnally sook to kill the Mendez's too. (But Victor himself led the attack to kill Armando, who had both Lance and Louise in his captivity. He kills Louise and wounds Lance before VIctor had even arrived on the scene. Diaz convinces you to steal a battle helicopter from Fort Baxter and lead an assault on Diego and the Mendez fortress Downtown. Victor agrees to do so, but not in the favor of Riccardo. Ashamed of his action throughout the game, Vic bids goodbye forever to Diaz, and leads the assault on the Mendez Building. Finally, there is a confrontation on the top of a building, which ends when Vic kills Diego and Martinez, who had arrived in a helicopter when Vic was halfway from reaching Diego. Lance arrives to help Vic, but turns up late, and together they agree never to touch drugs again. The Vance Brothers then get in Lance's Helicopter and leave Vice City to send their sick brother Pete the money for his asthma medications.(However,in 1986, Lance and Vic agree to sell 20 keys of cocaine to Vice City protagonist Tommy Vercetti prior to his arrival. During which,Ricardo Diaz secretly ambushes the deal, ending up with Victor and two of Tommy's bodygaurds being killed. This sets up the beggining of Vice City

Sub-Plot 1

In the first sub-plot of the game, Victor has just recently claimed Marty Williams's empire, and is seeking advice on how to run it properly/any other city info he can from Marty's sole survivng worker: Umberto Robina (Also appears in GTA: Vice City as the leader of all the Cuban gangsters in Little Havanna. It is explained here how the full rise of his power came about.) When Vic meets Umberto, he wants Vic to show that he hasballs before he will help out, by retreiving a largrly sought after package. Victor does, and is in point able to put in more work for Umberto. The primary goal of Umberto at the time is to gain controll of all the Cuban gang factions, which is blocked by a rival Cuban gang in Little Havanna called The Cholos. In the final Umberto mission: Havanna Good Time, Umberto and his gang plan to raid the Cholo compound for all it's guns and ammunition before leaving a destructive bomb hidden inside a vulgar pi~nata. THe raid is succesfully guarded by Vic, and the bomb wipes out all remaining Chol members. Thus bringing all Cuban faction controll under Umberto. Grateful, he helps Victor, Lance, and Phil in the mission: Blitzkrieg Strikes Again.

Sub-Plot 2

The second sub-plot in the game occurs after Mark Spitz puts Victor into contact with European director Reni Wassulmier, who at the time was filming multiple action-packed commercials for several different companies and products. Reni is smitten with Victor the moment he/she sees him. (Though legally being at the time a man with male genatalia, Reni calls himself universal with regard to gender) Reni, who was also dabbling with the pornographic film genre, asks to film him undressing after announcing loudly his desire to buy cocaine from him also. After a stuntman quits due to Reni's harrassment of him, Reni offers the job to Victor in exchange for cash and other important contacts. Vic agrees, and is introduced to a man known simply as Gonzalez. (more on him in another sub-plot) Victor is also introdused to up and coming adult contemporary artist Phil Collins. Phil's manager Barry explains that due to a personal debt wih a member of some gang, the debtor is out to kill Phil to teach Barry a lesson. Because of this, Vic is temporarily appointed head of Phil's security, until Barry finnally gives in and agrees to pay back the debt. Reni also puts Victor and Lance in contact with Diaz, which puts him in hot water with the Mendez's (particularlly Diego due to the romance he once had with Reni). So, in the mission So Long Schlong, Reni escapes assasination by having one last sex-change operation, making him a full woman. Reni then leaves for Europe to conquer the exotic adult film industry.

After being put in contact with Gonzalez, Victor is quickly fired due to the large drug deal gone wrong in Purple Haze. Shortly after, Diaz orders you to sabotage a drug deal of Gonzalez's (possibly the alternative deal he set up after Purple Haze) and bring him all the drugs on the scene. In retaliation, Gonzalez attempts to sabotage a deal Diaz makes with a crookid sect. of the DEA, where Diaz hands over 200 kilos. of cocaine to them in exchange fot many guns and rolls of ammo. But Gonzalez fails and is forced to work for Diaz by Diaz or die. Gonzalez agrees, but says he must also give his colonel Juan Cortez his drugs. So Victor is told by Diaz to defend Gonzalez and his cargo until he makes his way out of Vice City via the airport. He is soley attacked by greedy Sharks.

PlayStation 2 port

On February 7, 2007 Rockstar Games announced plans[8] for a PlayStation 2 port, released on March 6. It was confirmed by Rockstar Games that the PlayStation 2 version of the game would be an almost straight port.[9] The port has improvements such as enhanced graphics (including the addition of bloom effects, enabled via a "trails" option), draw distance, and performance as expected, but also includes a few new side activities that were not in the PSP release such as five new odd jobs, six additional unique jumps, five more rampages, and a new easter egg.

While other Grand Theft Auto ports have had extra features added (such as replays or custom soundtracks), this is the first port of any Grand Theft Auto game to include extra in-game content.
