It has been claimed that pills made of concentrated grapefruit contain enzymes or acids which digest fats. Consequently, dozens of grapefruit diets have been devised in the belief that they can reduce fat levels in the body. Grapefruit pills are usually sold with a diet plan, which probably explains the weight loss observed among some users of the pills. There is no generally accepted scientific evidence that grapefruit, or any other kind of food, contains enzymes that increase the rate of fat digestion. However, grapefruit is rich in vitamin C, and the pith lining the fruit contains high levels of pectin, a form of fibre, so the natural fruit is a valuable component of a balanced diet.
