In January 2000, the newly formed Gray Matter Interactive Studios began development of a new 3D Wolfenstein game, using the Quake III Arena engine licensed by Activision from id Software. Return to Castle Wolfenstein was released in November of 2001, to critical acclaim and commercial success. Gray Matter Interactive Studios had been 40% owned by Activision and the publisher exercised an option to acquire the remaining 60% in January of 2002. ~ All Game Guide
