The power is always greener on this side of the mountain. Green Mountain Energy buys and resells green power generated from hydroelectric, solar, wind, geothermal, and natural and landfill gas facilities. Since its founding in 1994 it has helped develop more than 50 wind and solar renewable facilities around the US. The company's renewable energy facilities have been responsible for avoiding the use of more than 11.3 million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions, a primary contributor to global warming. In 2010 Green Mountain Energy was acquired by major wholesale power player NRG Energy for $350 million.
