Gristede's (also spelled Gristedes, as used in the company's logo) is a New York City based chain of small supermarkets. Gristede's serves a mostly urban customer base due to its location.
History
The first Gristede's [gruh-STEE-deez] was founded by brothers Dietrich (Dick) and Charles Gristede in 1888. At the height of the company there were locations throughout NYC, as well as Westchester County and Connecticut.
The Gristedes brothers sold the company to the Southland Corporation in 1969. In 1986 the Southland Corporation was acquired by John Catsimatidis' Red Apple Group, which is still the parent company of Gristede's.
Locations
The vast majority of Gristede's locations are currently found within the New York City borough of Manhattan. There are currently three Gristede's locations outside of Manhattan and Roosevelt Island: Brooklyn, Pelham Manor, and Scarsdale New York.
There was also a Gristedes in the town of Somers in Westchester County. This store was notable for being the farthest Gristedes location from Manhattan for over a decade. The store has since closed. Another store was located in Southampton, New York (Long Island) and closed in the late 1980s. Port Jefferson had a store downtown until the mid 80s and Locust Valley had one for many years until a new owner in its shopping plaza forced it to shut down in 2008.
