Groom Lake is a salt flat in Nevada in the United States, located about 25 mi (40 km) south of Rachel. It has become well known because of the presence of Area 51. Area 51 itself is located just south of the salt flat, but the dry lake bed is also used by the Air Force, with several runways having been constructed on it. The lake measures approximately 3.7 miles (6.0 km) from north to south, and 3 miles (4.8 km) from east to west at its widest point.[1]
Papoose Lake is located south west of Groom Lake.
