group motives

Motives that contribute to the success of a group. They include four that are very important: conflict, cohesion, socialization and expectation. Other group motives include achievement need and need to avoid failure. Groups behave in much the same way as individuals when goal setting, and reacting to failure and success. However, the group as a whole tends to be more resistant to negative criticism and is less likely than an individual to adjust goals downwards after failure. See also group personality.
